This painting depicts the AV8B Harrier of Captain
Matthew L. Vogt, USMC, transiting from his home base in
the United States past Mt. Etna, Sicily, to operational
duty in Iraq where he was deployed for several months.
Captain Vogt, a product of Park Hill High School in
Kansas City, Missouri, graduated from Princeton
University in 1999 with a BA degree in politics, and he
entered the Marine Corps through the Officer Candidate
Program after college. Prior to starting flight
training, the Marine Corp granted Captain Vogt time to
try out for the United States Olympic Swimming Team for
the 2000 Olympics. Subsequent to his Olympic tryout, he
continued his Marine Corp career completing flight
training, one tour of combat duty in Iraq and a second
combat tour in Afghanistan. Major Vogt now resides in
California with his wife, Catherine, and their baby
daughter, Carson Elizabeth.
